How It Works

IV Rehydration: Faster Than Your GI Tract

Dehydration — from alcohol, heat, illness, or physical exertion — depletes fluid volume, disrupts electrolyte balance, and depletes B-vitamins that are water-soluble and readily excreted. Oral rehydration is limited by the rate at which the GI tract can absorb fluid, especially when already taxed by nausea or illness. IV delivery bypasses this entirely, replenishing fluids and electrolytes directly in the bloodstream.

Our Hydration Drip includes a balanced IV fluid solution, a complete electrolyte blend, and B-Complex vitamins. For hangover recovery specifically, alcohol's diuretic effect and the metabolism of acetaldehyde deplete B-vitamins and magnesium. B-vitamin replenishment supports the neurological symptoms associated with hangover — headache, fatigue, and light sensitivity — while IV fluids address the dehydration component directly.

At Vitality Texas, the Hydration Drip is framed as rehydration and nutrient replenishment — not as a hangover cure. It supports your body's recovery process. Optional anti-nausea medication is available by physician order.

  • Suitable for dehydration from heat, alcohol, or illness

B-Vitamin Restoration

  • Alcohol metabolism depletes B-vitamins rapidly
  • B-Complex IV delivery bypasses GI absorption entirely
  • Supports energy and neurological function post-dehydration

Anti-Nausea Support

  • Optional anti-nausea medication available (physician order required)
  • Reduces nausea and GI discomfort associated with dehydration
  • Session completed in 30–45 minutes

Protocol & What to Expect

1

Appointment

Same-day and next-day appointments typically available. Contact us to check availability.

2

Session Setup

10 minutes. IV line placed, formula verified by clinical staff under Dr. Jaqua's supervision.

3

IV Infusion

30 to 45 minutes. You relax while fluids, electrolytes, and B-vitamins are infused. Optional anti-nausea medication available.

4

Recovery

Most patients report meaningful symptom improvement during or immediately after the session. Continue oral hydration after your visit.

Who Benefits

Good Candidates for the Hydration Drip

The Hydration Drip is appropriate for patients experiencing acute dehydration from any cause — alcohol consumption, heat exposure, illness with vomiting or diarrhea, or intense physical activity. It is our fastest-turnaround IV protocol and the most commonly used for acute symptom relief.

Hangover recovery is the most common use case. San Antonio patients frequently use the Hydration Drip after evening events or weekend activities. We serve San Antonio and Boerne — see our IV therapy San Antonio page for location and availability details.

The Hydration Drip also pairs well with other protocols. Patients running our Myers Cocktail can add additional hydration volume if needed. Dr. Jaqua will advise.

Contents

What Is Actually in the Bag

Three components, and they are not equally important. The fluid volume does most of the work; the additives are supportive. Your exact formulation and volume are confirmed at arrival and ordered under Dr. Jaqua's supervision rather than pulled off a shelf.

Sterile isotonic IV fluid

The active component. An isotonic solution matches the salt concentration of your blood, so the fluid distributes into the circulation and the space around your cells rather than pulling water across membranes. This is what restores circulating volume, and it is why blood pressure, heart rate and that hollowed-out feeling improve during the session rather than hours later.

Electrolytes

Sodium, potassium, chloride and magnesium are lost together with fluid — through sweat in Texas heat, through vomiting and diarrhea in illness, and through alcohol's diuretic effect. Replacing water without replacing electrolytes can leave you flat or crampy even once you are rehydrated, which is a common outcome of drinking plain water after a heavy fluid loss.

B-Complex vitamins

B vitamins are water-soluble, which means they are excreted rather than stored, and alcohol metabolism consumes thiamine in particular. Replenishing them supports energy metabolism and neurological function. Worth being precise: this helps most if you are genuinely depleted. If you are not, the surplus is largely excreted, and we would rather say that than imply the vitamins are doing the heavy lifting.

Anti-nausea medication (optional add-on)

Ondansetron or similar, by physician order only, where nausea is a significant part of your presentation. It is not included by default because not everyone needs it and it is not a medication to give casually.

Safety Screening

Who Needs Clearance Before an IV Drip

A liter of IV fluid is a real physiological intervention, not a wellness accessory. In most healthy adults it is well tolerated. In some conditions the volume itself is the risk, because the heart or kidneys cannot clear it. Tell us about any of the following before you book, not on arrival:

  • Congestive heart failure or any diagnosed cardiac condition affecting fluid handling
  • Chronic kidney disease, reduced kidney function, or dialysis
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Liver cirrhosis, ascites, or a history of fluid retention
  • Any previous episode of fluid overload or pulmonary edema
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Current diuretics, or a recent change in blood pressure medication
  • Any prior reaction to IV fluids, vitamin infusions, or ondansetron
  • A bleeding disorder or anticoagulant therapy

None of these is automatically disqualifying. What they change is the decision: Dr. Jaqua may reduce the volume, adjust the formulation, slow the infusion rate, or decline it and recommend oral rehydration instead. That judgment is the reason infusions here are physician-supervised rather than run from a menu.

Important

When to Go to the ER Instead of Booking With Us

This is an elective outpatient service. It is not emergency care, and the difference matters, because dehydration can be the visible symptom of something that needs treating urgently. Go to an emergency department rather than booking an appointment if you have:

  • Chest pain, palpitations, or shortness of breath
  • Confusion, disorientation, or difficulty staying awake
  • Fever with a stiff neck, or a rash that does not fade under pressure
  • Vomiting blood, or black or bloody stools
  • Severe or worsening abdominal pain
  • No urine passed in more than 12 hours
  • Vomiting or diarrhea continuing beyond 24 to 48 hours
  • Fainting, or dizziness severe enough that standing is unsafe

If you are unsure, call the clinic and describe what is happening. We would rather redirect you to the right level of care than book you an infusion you should not be waiting for.

Honest Limits

What the Hydration Drip Will Not Do

It does not cure a hangover. A hangover is dehydration plus acetaldehyde accumulation, inflammatory signaling, disrupted sleep, and blood sugar effects. IV fluid addresses one of those directly and supports a second. It does not clear alcohol from your system any faster, and it does not eliminate the headache and malaise driven by the rest.

It does not detox anything. Your liver and kidneys do that. There is no mechanism by which a bag of fluid and B vitamins removes toxins, and any clinic telling you otherwise is selling a story.

It does not treat the underlying illness. If gastroenteritis or a viral infection caused the dehydration, rehydration makes you feel better while the illness runs its course. It is supportive care, not a cure, and it does not shorten the infection.

It does not boost immunity, energy or metabolism in a measurable way. Evidence for IV micronutrient infusions improving outcomes in healthy, non-deficient adults is limited. Where patients feel markedly better, the fluid volume is the most plausible explanation. We are not going to dress that up.

It is not a substitute for drinking water. A single infusion corrects an acute deficit. It does nothing for chronic under-hydration, and using it as a routine alternative to fluids and electrolytes through a Texas summer is both expensive and pointless.

It will not prevent a hangover.Pre-loading with IV fluid before drinking is sometimes marketed. It does not reduce alcohol's toxicity, and feeling protected while drinking more is the wrong outcome. We do not offer it for that purpose.
